Both in China and Japan traditions emphasized mindfulness as a way to understand the nature of existence, reduce suffering, and achieve spiritual awakening and enlightenment.

Modern Adoption of Mindful Meditation

The origin of this practice begins in 2500 years ago in Asia.

In the 20th century, it began to gain recognition in the West.

West got mindful meditation practice through the individual person called, Kabat-Zinn in 1979. Kabat-Zinn founded the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

He did not introduce is separately, rather he brought mindfulness into the realm of healthcare.

Later on his work popularized the practice as a method to reduce stress, anxiety, and pain.

With the arrival of mindful meditation in West, it has been widely adopted in various fields, including psychology, education, and business.

It has been also  incorporated into therapy (e.g., Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy), workplace wellness programs, and even schools.

Though first it was founded by the Lord Buddha in Asia, in West the practice has been stripped of its religious connotations.

It has opened the way for a broader audience.

And because of this reason today in worldwide many are able to follow mindful meditation.
